There is no better feeling than sitting down at the end of the day with your feet up and a cup of tea. That said, the question is do you rest your feet upon a delightful footstool, a soft pouffe or on the edge of the coffee table? Aside from the edge of a coffee table, footstools and pouffes are a fantastic piece of indoor furniture that look amazing in any room and can bring the look of the room together by adding that final touch.
Whether you use a footstool or a pouffe, did you know that there is a difference between the two? Well… we are going to explain the difference between them, so if you’re looking for a new footrest you’ll soon know the terms to search once you know the style you’re looking for.
Before we look at the differences between a footstool and a pouffe let’s look at some of the benefits of them. Both footstools and pouffes are versatile pieces of indoor furniture that can be used anywhere to add a stylish touch to your chosen room. What’s more, is that they have versatile uses, you can use them as a footrest as we’ve already discussed, but also as extra seating when you have guests over or as a coffee table to display beautiful books on.
Footstool
If you’ve researched footstools before, you may have realised that there are many different forms of them. This is because the term ‘footstool’ is an umbrella term for furniture pieces such as an ottoman, hassock or pouffe. The dictionary definition of a footstool is “a low stool used to support your feet”, this therefore supports the reason as to why footstool is used as an umbrella term for the different types of footstools available. Due to hassocks and ottomans having many differences, they have their own unique names to help people specify searches for the styles they are looking for.
A hassock is an upholstered footstool that has no storage and is not specified on sizes. They can often be lighter than an ottoman footstool, meaning that you can easily move this around the room or house depending on where you want to use it.
Ottomans have recently become a popular piece to use as a coffee table in living rooms, probably as a result of the storage space. Most traditional coffee tables contain a shelf underneath the top to store books, TV remotes etc that people can see, however with an ottoman this brings a different style to a coffee table and also provides a space to store all those items you’d like to hide.
Pouffe
As for pouffes, these are typically a large solid cushion that is placed on the ground surrounded by other pieces of indoor furniture. Much like footstools, a pouffe is also a versatile piece that can be used in any room and bring the style of a room together, whether you want to use them as a statement piece or to blend and complement the rest of the chosen room.
If you are interested in purchasing a footstool but your budget is smaller than the cost of these, purchasing a pouffe could be a more considerable option as they can often be less expensive than an ottoman or hassock.
At Inside Out Living we host a variety of fabulous footstools and pouffes, in a range of styles to suit the interior decor of your home.
Velvet Footstools
If you are on the search for a traditional chesterfield style footstool to add style to your home, we can be sure you’ll love The Grey Velvet Footstool.

Also available in a Jet Velvet colorway, this piece of indoor furniture would be an exceptional addition to a monochrome toned room, whether this be a bedroom, lounge or even bathroom.
Fluffy Stool
For a more extravagant textured footstool, take a look at The Fluffy Stool, a faux white fur stool complete with dark teak wooden legs, this stool would be a great addition to a bedroom or perhaps a dressing room.
Pairing this stool in a room with minimal textures would provide a great contrast to the style of the room and can easily and quickly change the vibe and feel of the room, from just a small piece of furniture.
Knitted Pouffes
To add some warmth into a Scandinavian style room, The Chunky Knitted Pouffe in Green/Grey and Light Grey will do this brilliantly whilst also adding an additional dimension into the room or even some outdoor space. This knitted style pouffe from Inside Out Living would look brilliant used as a table perhaps with a few books placed on top, or even a tray with a vase of flowers on.
Patterned Pouffes
Looking to add more of a boho vibe to your interior decor, why not take a look at the Charcoal Chevron Pouffe or the Sunshine Pouffe.
These are different from the knitted pouffes as these are the only patterned pouffes we stock. Both of these bring a different look thanks to the unique designs that they own, however for those who are wanting to add a touch of colour to their room the Sunshine Pouffe would be a more suitable choice than the Charcoal Chevron Pouffe.
It’s obvious to see that pouffes and footstools can often be classed as the same thing because of the uses that they share. However we can obviously see that there are technically many differences between a footstool and a pouffe. If you’ve been struggling to search for the style of footstool that you’d like to include in your home, we hope that this has given you some useful information about the actual style that you are looking for.
